Joseph Rice Torrey founded his razor strap company in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1858.

In 1880, he incorporated his business and acquired Joseph Turner (a skilled razor maker who had learned the razor craft in Sheffield as a boy) in order to begin manufacturing straight razors in the United States. The J. R. Torrey company is claimed to have been the first successful razor manufacturer in the US.
