Soaps: any shaving puck in a supermarket from a brand that's been around for more than 10 years. In many European countries that would be a stick by the brand Palmolive, among others. Don't know for the States.

Post shave: Witchhazel is not easy to find in Europe (at least not in Belgium) I'd recommend any decent after shave balm out of a normal supermarket. Nivea comes to mind. Many people already have something that they like.

I'd really really recommend an alum block. One of the brand Osma costs 10 to 15 bucks and lasts for 2 years or more. Most pharmacies have them (at least in Belgium).

Razors: wouldn't is be better to give concrete suggestions. for a non exhaustive example:

  • an entry level DOVO + professional honing job
  • a Double Arrow + professional honing job
  • a simple razor from the classifieds in shave ready condition

Soaps: any shaving puck in a supermarket from a brand that's been around for more than 10 years. In many European countries that would be a stick by the brand Palmolive, among others. Don't know for the States.

Creams: not needed for a beginner on a budget

Brush: beginners on a budget: a boar brush by the brand omega. One can happily shave for the rest of his life with a boar brush. Badger is a luxury I wouldn't want to miss, but a luxury nevertheless. When on a budget, go for boar. No need to spoil yourself with a badger at this point.

Honing: to be replaced with "edge maintenance" a paddle with CrO. Great for touch-ups during the first months of straight shaving (and there after), easy to use with little danger to mess up the edge.

So far my suggestions for improving this page.
