Escher Hones are Thuringian waterstones quarried and sold by Escher (Escher & Co, J.G. Escher Sons, etc). Some Escher quarried stones may have been branded and sold under other names. All other "Escher Type" stones should be referred to as Thuringians to distinguish. Many other vintage Thuringian stones work as well as Eschers. Not all modern quarried Thuringians work as well as the good vintage Thuringians.
The colour coding used by Escher to grade their stones may have related to the speed with which they cut. Many find there to be little difference with the end result from their differing Eschers. Those who have the uncommon 'brown' Escher find it to be a finer stone.
