The Tutorial
Here is my best attempt at putting together an actual guide to making Überlather.
- Überlather - Illustrated Step by Step
Start the process with a sink full of hot water, soak your lather bowl, and brush, in the water.
The next step, is the only variable step in the process, you have to soak the soap in hot water also, how much water depends only on your brush, I am using a Shavemac 28mm Silvertip so I start with about 1/4 of hot water on the soap. It is better to start with less water than more, as it is easier to add a bit, than take it away (just dribble water at the base of the bristles with your fingers) Set this to the side..
Place a Snurdle of shave cream in the warm bowl about almond size (no you don't need a Snurdle Dipper you can just use your finger)
Add 4-5 drops of Pure Glycerin to the shave cream and place the bowl back in the sink full of hot water...
This is the way my set up looks right before I am ready to build the lather
Add the soapy water to the lather bowl and set it back in the sink to warm
Shake out your brush to almost dry, and load the soap onto the brush, it should be sticky, and thick, the brush should get clumpy with soap (1 min)
Swirl the brush tips around the lather bowl mixing the cream, glycerin, and water together first, then mash the brush into the mixture.. The brush should absorb almost all the mixture leaving behind just a small amount of suds...
Start whisking and pumping the brush to build the lather this next picture is not lather it is still just foam...
We are almost there now the foam is starting to get creamy and thick becoming lather now!!!!
This is Überlather notice the creamy peaks off the brush it really should look like whipped cream.... Total time from start to finish 5 min...
Conclusion
Ahhhhh shave time now! One other hint make sure your face is good and wet before you lather up it really does help.
