In 1880, he incorporated his business and acquired Joseph Turner (a skilled razor maker who had learned the razor craft in Sheffield as a boy) in order to begin manufacturing straight razors in the United States.  The J. R. Torrey company is claimed to have been the first successful razor manufacturer in the US.
