I started shaving with a straight razor in December 2007. Prior to that I had been using cartridge and electric razors with no success. Switching to a DE helped considerably. But I enjoy the The Zen of Straight Shaving. I also like a challenge, and while the initial learning curve of straight shaving is very steep, one can get decent results within a few months. After that, it can become an obsession. This is reflected by my heavy involvement in this Wiki.

Motivation

They say that you should give back to the Net what the Net gave to you. My contribution here is to apply some Wiki and HTML magic to existing posts by way of thanks for this wonderful community.

My current setup

I currently own, and use, a number of straight razors. Below is a short list.

Name Grind Size
W&B Bow with spalted sycamore scales 1/2 5/8
Dovo Bergischer Löwe 1/1 6/8
Otto Deutsch's Hans 1/1 6/8
TI Le Grelot 1/4 6/8

Wiki stuff

I will readily admit that I like working with computers. The first one I ever used was a Sun in 1987, and I have stuck with wikipedia:Unix in its various shapes and forms ever since. Having worked with Unix for such a long time, I have also learnt to like reading technical documentation and experimenting with technology. This Wiki was a pleasant challenge, as I had never worked with Wiki software before.

Over the course of time, I will add some findings in this section in the hope that other members of the SRP Wiki Community will find them useful.

External editor or, How to edit a Wiki the easy way

  • For those of you who do not know how a Wiki works, or how its text should be formatted, do read wikipedia:Help:Editing
  • The standard editing toolbar is nice, but you can save a lot of time and trouble by using a specialised editing tool:
    • wikipedia:Text_editor_support has an explanation of how to install and invoke those tools.
    • If you are using Firefox (and you should be, for many, many reasons), a good thing to have is wikEd. Installation takes two mouse clicks, and the result is, well, extremely useful
